The first butterfly of the season is a well-known bird of omen, good or ill, depending on colour - but what about the first ice skater of the season? I saw one just now, from the bus; couldn’t tell its colour, but the arms were spread butterflyishly. I’ve decided this is an omen: evidently it means I get a pay rise soon.
