I didn’t know Johannes Berg well; we met him a few times every year at sf conventions in Sweden, Britain or Norway. When I talked with him it would be in a group of people – but while he was maybe not a close personal friend, I was always happy to meet him; he was genuinely friendly, liked people and was always interested in what they had to say. Of course he was also opinionated, as sf fans tend to be, but never in a way that belittled others’ opinions. He was also very smart, very knowledgeable, and had a lot of rather diverse interests that he was deeply involved in. So he built bridges between different fandom groupings, by force of being a central person in them all, himself – groups of people who would otherwise look at each other with distrust had to admit that in some ways they did have something in common.

An hour ago we received a phone call telling us that Johannes H Berg died this morning in Oslo. We didn’t know he’d been ill – it was a brief illness – so the shock was keen. Johannes will be deeply missed.

Edited to add: There is a memorial site here.

The penguin is a very funny creature

Have you seen one I know you can’t deny

That there is nothing as peculiar as a penguin

Unless it’s you and I!

(Peculiar Penguins)

There is something about penguins – an in particular, there have been a lot of them about recently. The Penguin Slap game I linked to a few months ago (here) was followed by three more games in the same vein; the series is now called Yeti Sports and all the games are here. I dunno, I don’t find it quite as addictive when there’s four of them at the same site, though. I can stop whenever I want to.

And then yesterday, I received the .gif image linked below. It came to me in an email that had been forwarded at least five times, so its origins are shrouded in mist… hence I can’t provide a proper attribution. But who cares – watch it and tell me you don’t know somebody you would like to do this to!

Backgammon is a STUPID game.

We play a lot of Backgammon these days. We bought a very nice board in Kadıköy (bottom right corner of map) and are trying to get past the beginner stage. Johan usually beats me, but he’s not so much ahead of me that it gets boring.

So we’re going to have a game now, with tea from Turkish tea glasses and some suitable music.

And, almost a month later, I’m here again! We returned from Turkey three weeks ago, and I’ve had this feeling that I ought to write a lot about the trip before writing anything else – hence, no postings at all. Silly me.

Things have happened locally: Peter defended his thesis yesterday, very successfully, so now he is no longer a grad student. He’ll remain at the department for another month or so, as he is still teaching undergrads, and then he’s moving to the US for his post doc.

Also, Johan and I managed to produce a fanzine – not a major feat, admittedly, but a good thing nevertheless.

And Josefine Öquist has been elected Storvreta’s sexiest woman, I saw in yesterday’s paper 🙂
